BRUNI, Antonio Bartolomeo (1757-1821)

Simrock: Bonn, [1814]. Plate no. 1075. Folio. 15 pp. Engraved. Crisp paper and musical text, minor foxing on title page, otherwise very good.
Bruni was a violinist, conductor and composer who was musically active primarily in Paris 1780-1806. He was best known for his comic operas, his numerous violin works (many pedagogical, as in the case of the present edition) and a viola method. His oeuvre included nearly 100 works for string quartet and trio, as well as over 100 duos (most for two violins), nearly 40 sonatas for various instruments and over 100 etudes and caprices.

He was also a supporter of the French Revolution and catalogued the musical instruments confiscated during the Reign of Terror.

Fémy was a violinist of some renown who won the First Prize at the Paris Conservatoire in 1807 after studies with Kreutzer. More than a dozen of his instrumental works were published in the 1830's but his works are unavailable in modern editions and are generally unknown today. No works are listed in RISM, and Fémy remains unmentioned in Grove or MGG, although a good listing can be found in Fétis.

Two complete violin parts.

These duos exhibit an unusual creativity in the transcription process. Of particular note in this regard is the G Minor/G Major sonata (K379, third of the set), which exhibits substantial rewriting of the variation movement that departs markedly from the original figuration and shape of the lines even when the original figuration could have served perfectly well.

Clementi: London, [after 1821], n.p.n. Folio. 6+2 pp. Engraved. Pages browned with untrimmed tattered edges but broad margins leave musical text completely intact, title page attached with hinges, otherwise very good.
Two separate violin parts. Watermark: 1821.

Sanderson was a violinist and conductor in the London theater who in 1812 adapted a Scottish folk melody for use with words from Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake" to create "Hail to the Chief." It was published in the US during the War of 1812 and gained some popularity then, but only later became defined as the official musical tribute to the US President, with different lyrics.

Two separate violin parts. The first violin title page says "Chez Melles. Erard" but bears the Naderman stamp. The second violin title page is engraved "Chez J.H. Naderman".

London. Folio. 25/14/20+25/14/20 pp. Engraved. Sturdy 19th-century three-quarter leather with blue marbled boards. Edges rubbed, light water stain at top of first violin pages, measures numbered neatly throughout in ink, some bleedthrough in Op. 21, otherwise very good.
Three sets of duets bound together in two volumes, one for each violin.
