"Seven Octaves" was a pseudonym used by Gottschalk in some of his publication. According to Doyle, this work actually may be by Paul Ernest.

First and last leaves detached, title page evenly browned, light water stain on lower right corner of final page (not affecting musical text), offprinting throughout, otherwise very good.

The original version of this transcription of music from Verdi's "I Lombardi" was for two pianos. A note on the title page reads:

Ce morceau fut composï¿½ ï¿½ la demande de S.A.I. Madame la Grande Duchesse Anne de Russie. Il fut jouï¿½ pour la premiï¿½re fois ï¿½ la fï¿½te que donna cette Princesse le 23 Juillet, 1850, dans son Palais d'ï¿½tï¿½ "la Boissiere" en l'honneur de leurs Majestï¿½s les Reines de Sardaigne, de Prusse, de Saxe, de leurs Altesses Royales les Princesses de Saxe-Weymar, du Prince Albert de Prusse, des Princesses de Wolkonsky, de Sokozanet, et des Hospodars de Valachie.

Dedicated inside cover "au Général Don José Paëz, ex-Président de la République de Venezuela. Témoignage de respectueuse amitié et de profonde admiration." This is followed by an excerpt in French from the "France Musicale" by Gustave Chouquel about the work.

William Hall & Son: New York, 1870. Plate no. 6519. FIRST EDITION in this version. Folio. 9 pp. Engraved. Original reddish-brown wrapper. Untrimmed edges, some offprinting, otherwise fine and crisp.

This edition lacks the trio published in 1874 and may represent the first version Gottschalk sent directly to the publisher from South America.

The wrapper dates from 1871 or later, having a copyright notice on the catalog of popular ballads (Hall catalog "Popular Ballads," #14), as well as a catalog of Gottschalk with prices on the front.

This issue postdates the publisher's move to 547 Broadway in 1857.

Cover of polished paper features beautiful art nouveau stand of trees on hillside with bronze sky. Louis F. Gottschalk, grand-nephew of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, was a film composer best known for writing the score to the original silent film version of the Wizard of Oz.
