Of particular note among the musical scores is a selection of early editions of Mozart’s operas, including Così fan tutte (K588) (first edition pictured to the left, in addition to several early editions), Abduction from the Seraglio, K384, Don Giovanni (K527), Idomeneo (K366), and Magic Flute (K620).

Also of interest are three early editions of Mozart’s Piano Concertos, including a remarkable edition of the Piano Concerto No. 25 (K503) that includes within it the original concerto for full orchestra, as well as two arrangements (one for strings alone, playable as a piano quintet, and the other with ad libitum wind parts); and the Concertos No. 17 in G (K453) and No. 24 in C minor (K491). Additionally, the list includes three interesting early editions of less common Mozart vocal music, including a first edition of a selection from the incidental music to Thamos (K345, published as the German/Latin motet Ob fürchterlich tobend sich Stürme erheben / Ne pulvis et cinis superbe); an early edition of the vocal trio, Das Bandel (K441); and an early edition in parts of the Masonic Cantata, Das Lob der Freundschaft (K623).

The list is also rich in a variety of early editions of chamber music and piano music from c. 1800-1820, and also includes a number of editions that are interesting for other reasons. These include Muzio’s Clementi’s signed copy of the piano/vocal score of Abduction from the Seraglio (K384, pictured to the right), and a handful of scores by other composers that are related to Mozart in interesting ways, such as piano potpourris by Henry Cramer on The Abduction and The Magic Flute, a “Fantasina” on themes from The Marriage of Figaro (K492) by Hummel, and piano variations by Anton Eberl, which circulated widely under Mozart’s name in the 1790s.

Among the facsimiles are eight of Mozart’s ten late string quartets, handsome facsimiles of Don Giovanni (K527) and The Magic Flute (K620), and a selection of facsimiles in many genres, including vocal music, piano music, symphonies and chamber music.

The manuscripts and most of the printed editions are in very good to fine condition, while the facsimiles are all very good to as new.

Also among the selection are a number of transcriptions of operas, including Beethoven’s Fidelio (third version), Donizetti’s L’Elisere d’Amore and Verdi’s Rigoletto, and a set of overtures from four operas of Peter Winter.

Beethoven features prominently in the list, with four-hand versions of works in many genres, including piano concertos (No.1, No. 2 and No. 3), piano sonatas (“Pathetique” and “Waldstein”), string quartets (Op. 18 No. 1 and No. 6, Op. 59, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, Op. 95 and Op. 135) and five symphonies (No. 1, No. 4, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9). Many of these Beethoven editions were formerly in the collection of Ludwig Landsberg (1807-58), who amassed a famous and extensive collection of early music and music literature.

Additionally there are a number of works from minor and little-known composers from the 18th through 19th centuries, as well as some near-forgotten works that were once popular, such as Goldmark’s Rustic Wedding Symphony. But there are also numerous gems from Spohr, Mendelsohn and Mozart, including a rare and beautiful 1820s Swedish lithograph of a four-hand arrangement of Mozart’s String Quartet in D Minor, K421.

Most of the editions are in very good to fine condition.

Among the early editions are first editions of the St. John and St. Matthew Passions and bound volumes of first editions of C.P.E. Bach’s keyboard sonatas from the 1760s and 1770s.

Also in the collection are historic early 19th-century editions, including volumes from the Zurich publisher Hans Georg Nägeli’s series Musikalische Kunstwerke im Strengen Style von J.S. Bach u. andern Meistern (Art of Fugue, Violin Sonatas).

Nine of the twenty early editions were formerly in the collection of Ludwig Landsberg (1807-58), who amassed a famous and extensive collection of early music and music literature. Several of these are in their original early 19th-century vellum bindings.

Most of the the editions are in very good to fine condition while the facsimiles vary from very good to as new.

This collection also includes two important examples of early lithography, the first edition of Mozart’s Musical Joke (K522) published by André in Offenbach-am-Main, and the first French edition, published by André’s Charenton shop near Paris. The autograph of Mozart’s Musical Joke was one of a body of Mozart autographs that the André firm acquired from Mozart’s widow in 1799 and began publishing in 1800. The collection also includes one of André’s later editions and all three include amusing title page vignettes depicting the hapless musicians satirized in Mozart’s music.

Another hard-to-find item is a bound collection of Spohr’s Double String Quartets bound together with Mendelssohn’s Octet. The Spohr works have not been republished in modern editions but are quite worthy of more attention. This set is beautifully and durably bound and includes three Spohr first editions.

In addition to newly added chamber music, we’ve also updated the whole online catalog, especially the list of Music Facsimiles, where several new items have been added and others updated.

We’ve also made changes to the website overall, not least this page of announcements, but also including improvements to the Online Catalog inventory search system.
